As far as the gasket I would reccomend using a gasket and putting a lineof silicone around it on both sides to hold it in place when you are putting it together as well as sealing it up. Up where I am going to school our instuctor who worked for IH and Allis said that from his expierience the only places silicone should be applied are the oil pan gasket and the PTO/transmissions gaskets. He also said it always works better to use the silicone with the gasket in these areas. Not just the silicone by itself. And judging from what we used it on up at school, he was right.
