Cub exhaust

I just bought a 1955 reg. cub and it has the underhood exhaust. It only has a pipe from the manifold down to in front of the rear wheel. Is there suppose to be a muffler on it or did it come this way originally? Also what was the reason behind going under the hood? Thanks
