I just bought a 1955 reg. cub and it has the underhood exhaust. It only has a pipe from the manifold down to in front of the rear wheel. Is there suppose to be a muffler on it or did it come this way originally? Also what was the reason behind going under the hood?
Thanks

Starting in late '54, the standard configuration for Cubs was the underslung exhaust. The pipe should reach to near the front of the transmission housing and a muffler should attach at that point. The original muffler had a down deflector stamped into the outlet pipe. Many generic replacements didn't have that feature.

The cub should have a muffler attached behind the mounting bracket attached to the front of the transmission

Cris,
I have a 1955 Farmall Cub (not a Lo-Boy) and it has the under-hood/under-slung exhaust. The exhaust when I bought the tractor exited out of a short pipe (which is part of the muffler) under the drive axle. On my Cub, I have replaced the muffler with a piece of pipe turned ground-ward and slightly pinched at the end of the tailpipe to quiet the exhaust note. I don't know if the muffler was "standard" or a "special attachment". Guy Fay might know.

Yes there should be a muffler. I guess it was done for clearance purposes. I have them with both styles of exhaust. Is there a hole in the hood for the exhaust, some were converted.

Cris, I think you have a cub utility!!!!! !!!!! Put a muffler on it if it's too loud for you. I have never seen a cub with underslung exaust but I've not seen everything YET!. Sure would like to see a picture. David.
