As others have said, the low ash oil is to keep the exhaust vavles from carboning up the stems. When that happens and you start to pull it hard, the stems will expand as their temeratur rises. This expansion causes them to hang in the guides. As soon as that happens it will burn the valve. When looking for a low ash oil, look for something that has an ash content of 1/2 percent or less. They will probably also be listed for use in propane engines. Use multi grade or a straight weight as recommended for the temperatures it will be operated in. Diesel oils will have an ash content approaching two percent. The ash is used to neutralize acids formed from sulfur in the diesel fuel. New diesel oils have a lot of changes in this area as low sulfur fuels are now required.
