What engine in 706?

I just recently acquired a 1964 706 gas tractor & had some basic questions. It has a serial# of 7716-S-Y. Would this be the 263 engine? I will at most only use it for 100 hours per year doing a little dirt/snow removal & moving round bales of hay. What is the best oil to use in it? I read a lot about low ash, but I have also seen where others are running 10w-40 too. Any suggestions on what to use?

As others have said, the low ash oil is to keep the exhaust vavles from carboning up the stems. When that happens and you start to pull it hard, the stems will expand as their temeratur rises. This expansion causes them to hang in the guides. As soon as that happens it will burn the valve.

When looking for a low ash oil, look for something that has an ash content of 1/2 percent or less. They will probably also be listed for use in propane engines. Use multi grade or a straight weight as recommended for the temperatures it will be operated in.

Diesel oils will have an ash content approaching two percent. The ash is used to neutralize acids formed from sulfur in the diesel fuel. New diesel oils have a lot of changes in this area as low sulfur fuels are now required.

Ya want to know about a 706 ask me , i'll tell ya like it is . No on any oil you use ONLY 30 weight low ash if ya want it to live a long and healthe life , ya run 93 octain gas that is hightest to anybody that does not know the differance . Each time ya do a tune up ya check engine timing and this here ya realy have to know if ya have a 263 or a 291 as the timing get set differant between the two. Do not run hot plugs in it a C 86 A/C will work fine Motor Craft or Autolites for best performance . Keep the valves adjusted , keep the clutch free play set and when setting the free play ya have to do the whole deal on setting the transmission brake and the T/A dump valve. Like isaid if ya want to know the correct answers to your questions ask me i know that tractor inside and out.

Low-Ash all the way. We"ve had our 706 since 1973 and have always used it, never burned a valve yet. With your serial number, the engine should be a 263, but like Nat said, it is possible that the 291 kit has been installed. Just depends on the previous owner, as some guys don"t like to spend the extra $$$ to have the block bored to accept the 291 sleeves.

My IH mechanic scolded my brother because he did not use low ash oil in his IH 606 gas engine and had a premature overhaul as a result. I think most IH mechanics will highly recomend low ash oils in those 6 cylinder gas engines.

The engine size is stamped into the block just below the #1 (front) sparkplug, IIRC. It probably is a C263 because that's what came in the early 706s (1964). I don't think the 291 was an option until 1966 or 1967.

Even if it says C263, it may have been bored out to a C291 sometime in its life. The only way to know that would be to pull the head, but that's a lot of work on a running tractor.

The best oil to use is the oil you use. Any high quality engine oil, multigrade or single, is perfectly acceptable in this tractor's engine.

Up until last year I farmed with a 706 as main heavey tillage tractor. Burned the exhaust valves 3 times in 4 yrs. Started using low-ash oil and had no problems since. You absolutly must use low-ash oil if you are going to use this tractor hard.

I am going to slap your fingers , NO ANY OIL IS NOT ACEPTABLE in a I H gas tractor unless ya want to put exhaust valves in it all the time . and also the CID of the engine is marked on the machined surface beside the oil filter . If no markings then at one time the block was replaced.

Tractor Vet:

Not wanting to sound stupid, how do you tell if oil is low ash? I always run non-detergent SAE30 in my IH.

Well ya can just buy it from Case I H or ask your fuel supplier for Low ash oil . And any of the stuff made after the M's used detergant oil to help clean the engine . So i don 't know what model tractor you have but most people have switched many years a go . Now if you have not and are going to then it is wise to pull the pan and clean it and go on a 50 hour change for awhile to get the engine cleaned out . That old Non Det. oil can cause rings to stick and have lot of sludge build up . Guys talk about mulit grade well that is fine in the newer stuff as the engine clearances are tighter and they will hold better lube pressures the older stuff were not that tight . Multi grades did not realy come on till the mid 70 's in Hd operation . When i bought my 4370 I H with a cummins the book called for stright weight 30 w seires 3 oil . I was one of the unlucky ones that got some of the bad liners from the factory and my engine was toaste at 65000 miles Cummins put in a new engine and this one was to be run on 15-40 series 3 so Cummins changed in mid 77 But the 86 seires tractors were still running the stright weight seires 3 oils .So i feel like this the boys that designed the engines know far more then me .
