Even on a healthy one the lever doesn't move as far to go into 5th as into the other gears. When mine did that it was the sliding gear that was worn, turned out the end of the drive shaft that it slides on to was ok. Only way to know for sure is to lift the cover. A repair manual, available from this site, top left corner of this page, will tell you how to go about it. Not a bad job, and you'll learn a lot about the tractor. Good luck, Wm
