My 45 H has started jumping out of 5th gear and is getting worse fast. It doesn't seem to bother going down hill, just up hill and on the level.

The transmission has no out of the ordinary sounds and is quiet compared to most H's I have driven. It doesn.t seem to go in 5th gear very far, could this be a bent or worn shifting fork. Any sugestions or imformation would be appreciated.

My dad had a 39 h that he gave away! it would slip out of 5th and you would have to hold it in, we just used a bungie cord and that worked for a long time. but it did go out and it would just grind. I know that they used hardened gears until i belive 46 or so. after that they used induction hardened gears and they lasted longer and were better. If you think it is not going in all the way, pop the shifter off and use a big screwdriver and put it into 5th manually. if it does the same thing it is the 4th 5th slider. I had a shifter break and was 5 miles from home so i put it into 5th with a screwdriver and drove it all the way home. I would rather take off in fifth gear and save the gears of if i do use 4th to go into 5th i put a little pressure on the shifter before i put it into 5th because every time you grind the gears it IS doing DAMAGE!

As others said, likely your 4/5th sliding gear is worn out. That is the one that has splines on the inside to mate with the small gear on the tranny input gear. These are frequently worn due to grinding gears to shift from 4th to 5th. I'd suggest getting a new one. Good used ones are not so easy to come by, as many have the same problem. Pretty big job to fix, as the main drive shaft has to be disconnected and the bearing cage and transmission input shaft have to be removed from the front of the transmission. Also easier if the transmission top is removed, although some say this can be done by just removing the belt pulley assembly. The problem could also be caused by a bad pilot bearing in the transmission. While you have the thing apart, probably best to replace that anyway.

Even on a healthy one the lever doesn't move as far to go into 5th as into the other gears. When mine did that it was the sliding gear that was worn, turned out the end of the drive shaft that it slides on to was ok. Only way to know for sure is to lift the cover.
A repair manual, available from this site, top left corner of this page, will tell you how to go about it. Not a bad job, and you'll learn a lot about the tractor.
Good luck, Wm

It could be a shifting fork that is bent a little and not letting the gear make full contact with the lower gear.

The same thing started to happen to my 46 Farmall H. What had happened was that the previous owner shifted on the fly and ground down the 4th and 5th slider gear. So what I am doing now is replacing it with a good used one. The reason it jumps out so easily is the it only meshes with the input gear about 1/8 to about 3/16 of an inch so it doesn't take much to make it pop out.
Hope this helps,
Nick
