theres alot of these myths. Most people told me to junk my car, the first one I had, cause the rear main seal was leaking like a seive. I had a few weeks off work, so I dug into it. It was a little overwhelming, but I took my time, labeled most things, took pictures. I also replaced the torque converter seal, front seal, and axle seals. When I was done, I was like uhmm, that was easy!!
Seems I've had the motor out of every car I've owned, my moms car, my aunts car, and my fathers.
As with most things, a little research, time, patience, and common sense, about anything is possible. It really helps to have a forum of great people to help ya out too. I have never taken my cars to a shop, and never would, and that goes for my tractor, and every piece of machinery, eletronic devices, and so on. (altho I have had some things to a machine shop, but that was from lack of machines to do the work myself)

I'm not braggin here, but alot of people say "You're so smart!!" I'm like, uhmm, no I'm not, it's common sense. You put it together how you took it apart. For the most part thats true. As with electronics, most fixes are sinple, new cord, new switch, diode here, triac there. Learning the use of a multimeter and the basic electronic components, most people could fix their equipment. I am far from smart, but have fixed probably 90% of the stuff I've been asked, and that which I didnt fix was either not economical, or was deisgned to fail and cause choas in the first place.

Dont ever fear to learn something. Get some advice and some books or websites on the subject and have at her!!
