magneto problems??

I posted earlier about changing out from a mag to a distributor, some come back and say fix it.I would like to but I can't seem to find the mark on the flywheel for timing it, I have tryed putting # 1 TDC then setting the mag, it runs like crap. I can adjust the mag some and get it to run better but not right. I put a new carb and manifold on also. I can get the timing close but it still has poor performance. With a dis. I figure you can time it by vacum and rpm. Any help with this would be appreciated. I am starting to regret selling the John deere.
