I posted earlier about changing out from a mag to a distributor, some come back and say fix it.I would like to but I can't seem to find the mark on the flywheel for timing it, I have tryed putting # 1 TDC then setting the mag, it runs like crap. I can adjust the mag some and get it to run better but not right. I put a new carb and manifold on also. I can get the timing close but it still has poor performance. With a dis. I figure you can time it by vacum and rpm. Any help with this would be appreciated. I am starting to regret selling the John deere.

I've not had the mag apart, that far back, I just tuned it up (which helped)and I feel for compression and bring #1 tdc by hand, and the rotor is lined up. It might run right for 2 minutes then it loads down and miss for a couple, lightly tap the mag and it smooths out. It is like the impulse works good then some. It is almost like it starves for gas then finds it, then floods. But like I said I have replaced the manifold, and carb with new, that made no difference. But messing with the mag does.I guess I should buy a rebuilt one,if that don't I will have to trade it for a Mahindra

Impulse only works when starting then it goes to 33 deg advance. Purpose for the impulse is to make the spark for fire at start as soon as engine runs the impulse no longer happens.

You have an internal problem with the magneto.

You could try new points and condensor to see if that helps, or buy a refurbished one. MagMan has one on eBay right now for $110 shipped - the coil cover is cracked. Normally I think they are around $150 shipped.

The distributor will be a lot simpler and cheaper to maintain than a magneto. When the tractors were putting in 16+ hour days 6 days a week many were changed to distriutors for these reasons. There was a reason that the magnetoes were phased out on new tractors about 50 years ago. Just another opinion.

If you have had the timing drive apart (gears under timing cover) you could have a problem there. Or if you have had the magneto apart there are gears in there that can be set wrong.

I would start by pulling the #1 spark plug and cranking over to find TDC and then pull the distributor cap on the mag and see where the rotor is pointing to. Let us know what you find.

if you can find TDC you don't need no mark. But the magneto does have internal timing that needs to be right. Have you messed that up?

Are you sure that you have #1 on compression when the rotor points to #1 tower on the cap. You mite not have the rotor set correct. Mags are lots less trouble makers that a Dist. I have had mags on some tractors for many yrs without problems and no maint like the BN used in the yearly tractor ride iv had it for 23yrs and never have touched the mag since i ohauled the tractor
