Hi James, My M done the same thing 7 or 8 years ago. It was loosing spark to the points as soon as you tried to start it. You could check points with a screwdriver and points fired properly, but when engageing starter points died, it nearly drove me nuts. It turned out to be the voltage regulator I dont know why or how, but I replaced regulator and it has started every time since.Also while I was having this trouble you could pull it 3 feet and it started right up. This may not be your problem I dont know. Just my 2 cents worth.
