I should say before I get too far that Guy Fay's Originality book is a treasure, both as a beautiful book and for the information it contains. But you need to be careful comparing colors from old photos with those from newer ones. Films have progressed a great deal since the time those vintage photos were taken and, even among the many fine films that may be available at any given time, one of the characteristics a photographer considers in choosing a film is the way it responds to different parts of the spectrum-some do better with blues, others with reds, etc. I certainly agree with your observation about the gloss, which really stands out on many of the repainted tractors in the book, though. But how much or how little yellow? It can be costly experimenting without any real definitive example of what the dried color should be. Maybe someone has encountered the exact proportions in their research adn could share it. I expect though, that the fine folks that built our tractors may have handled those proportions as loosely as they did their implement paint schemes and changed it from time to time, perhaps inspired by a change in the wind or that day;s horoscope. We can be confident, though, that the use of yellow to stretch the war-era Farmall pigments didn't result in anything like an Allis orange. I'm getting ready to tear into a 46 BN myself and my plan for the original look is simply to skip the hardener to avoid the high gloss. My 2 bits, bein' as I wrote too much for two cents.
