when it comes to batteries you get what you pay for. a battery works off of a chemical reaction that changes rate with temperature. a colder temperature will result in a slower reaction which results in a "weak" battery. check the cca (cold cranking amps) of your battery. the higher the number the better the battery, and the better it will perform in cold weather. my sugeston is to convert to a 12 volt - ground alternator system before you invest any money in the 6 volt system i have had a lot of problems in the past that have been fixed with this conversion. http://www.ytmag.com/articles/artint195.htm
there is a step by step process to do that conversion an IT shop manual will greatly help you perform general maintence, and it is a great asset to have. the missing problem could be plugs/points/plug wires/rotor/distributer cap/moisture in distributer cap and probably a few others i cant think of right now. just have to play around with it to get it figured out. the reason wyh your tractor cranks faster the second time is due to an increase in the temperature of your battery. when you run a current through a battery (cranking it over in your case) there is a temperature rise due to internal resistance which speeds up the chemical reacton in your battery and makes it crank better tee second time. you can also accomplish this by turning your lights on for a few minutes before you try to start it. also in cold weather starting i find that a small spray of either before you try to start it greatly helps. electrial stuff is only hard untill you do it a few times. good luck. happy new year.
