Posted by Kenny Christopherson on January 01, 2002 at 09:40:55 from (64.12.104.47):

Just got my 1940 M 2 weeks ago. It runs like a clock, and tin is straighter than an arrow. When I put it in high gear and go for about a half a mile, it runs fine, But after that it starts to miss, it doesn't happen on hills, just level ground. Any idea what it could be? In all the other gears, it is fine. I have never done points/condensor or anything on a tractor. I am not very good with electirics.

The dealership I got it from said he just gave it a tune up, and a new battery, which I am haveing doubts about the new battery. It LOOKS new, but sure doesn't perform like it. I know the on/off switch needs some cleaning, because you have to pull with all your might to get it all the way out, but that is not the problem with the battery I don't think. This tractor is posotive ground, and I am not sure if it is a 6 volt or 12 volt. The battery has the 3 caps for the acid level, the acid is over the fins in the battery, so that can't be the problem. We have to keep jumping it with the truck.
The symptoms are as follows: With switch all the way out, it cranks slow, then once you crank it again, it cranks a little faster, but not quite fast enough to pop it over. Then it starts to get slow again. It started fine a couple weeks ago when it was 40 degrees, but now its about three degrees, and it doesn't crank much at all. I am thinking it is the cold weather, and it just wore the battery down, but I could be wrong. This tractor does have a block heater, and I do plug it in when I want to run it. It takes a while for it to get it up to operating temp.

I was looking at the tractor-with the hood and grille off for cleaning, and I found a plug for an extension cord or something that goes down into a cylinder head stud right behind the manifold, alongside the valve cover. It comes straight up out of the top of the stud. I haven't plugged it in yet, as I don't want to ruin anything. Any idea what this little plug is for?

Anyone ever had any luck with getting that hand crank mechanism to turn? Mine is rusted solid. The part that the hand crank connects to moves, but once it makes contact with the piece inside the front bolster, it stops.

I know this post jumps around a lot, but I would rather put out one long post instead of 4! Thanks a lot to all who replies! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Today's Featured Article - Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U ... [Read Article]
