Sounds like the bolser pivot shaft thrust bearing has failed. When the front end is jacked up can you see signs of wear on the underside of the upper bolster casting where the top of the pivot shaft flange (where the lower bolster bolts on) has been rubbing? If so that's a sure sign the thrust bearing is gone. If no wear is noted, then perhaps the nut that holds the sector gear onto the top of the pivot shaft is loose or missing - which can make your steering REALLY sloppy! First thing to to would be to remove the grille and the steering gearbox cover for a peek inside, then jack the front end. That should show you the source of the vertical play. Good luck!!
