Rick, You are using your experience to confuse yourself. The size of the clutch has to do with longevity issues, not power transmitted. We were originally discussing whether surfacing improved the clutch in any practical way without changing its' size, only its' surface. A very small and acceptable amount of wear will make the clutch parts fit automatically. In the meantime, the performance of the clutch would NOT be affected. I correctly said the friction was dependent on the two materials in contact, and the pressure applied, and independent of the area in contact. This was taken to a silly example of transmitting 7,000 HP with a 4" clutch, which of course can be done. To help you understand that the area is not important, go to the example of a locomotive pulling a train. It has a very small area of contact with the rail under very heavy pressure, and can pull the whole da***d train. Same rules of friction...independent of area. This is the fact that you think is in error. Sorry. George Willer
