Aloha, I have a Lincoln welder and have a question on the charging system. The regulator has 1 terminal in the back that goes to the A terminal on the motor/generator (used to start the engine and chagres the batt). There are 3 terminals on the bottom of the regulator marked L (tech said that is used for the idiot light if wanted), F goes to F on the motor/generator, and B goes to the battery. Ok now the question, if I wanted to polarize the generator, how would this be done? I saw one article that says to momentarily place a short jumper wire from the Batt terminal to the Gen terminal of the regulator. What would be the gen terminal?? Would that be the terminal in the back of the regulator that goes to A on the motor/generator?? TIA

Doogdoog, Yeppers the VR terminal labeled ARM (labeled GEN on some VR's) is the one that wires to the gennys ARM post and thats the one you momentarily flash jump over to the VR's BAT terminal to polarize the genny and you should get a small spark indicating all is wired up n the gennys field windings are continuous to ground.

Sooooo o the VR terminal that wires to your gennys ARM post is indeed the GEN or ARM terminal that needs flashed over to the BAT terminal to polarize the genny. You accomplish the same thing (assuming all is wired correct n grounded) by using a wire n jumping the VR's BAT terminal or even the ungrounded battery post itself direct to the Gennys ARM post.

Aloha, Thanks for the information and just wanted to be sure since it is charging now. Wanted this for the future in case anything happens. This welder was originally a pull start and I found some parts to modify it to an electric start. It was only an AC machine but I modified it to be AC/DC with a selectable switch. This little guy can really burn.

Here's a better explanation than I could give. Hope you are doing well after the quake.

Thanks for finding and reposting that thread, I have copied n saved it this time so we dont have to reinvent the wheel each time that same question is asked. I didnt recall laying all that out before in so much detail lol
