I would like to rebuild the carburetor on my Ford 961 gasoline engine. This is a Marvel-Schebler carburetor model TSX.

I have purchased a rebuild kit.

I am definitely a novice, and am wondering if anyone has any tips / advice on things that would make the job go smoother. Anything to avoid?

Any help would be much appreciated!!

As you can see from Glen's picture, the main jet assembly must be removed prior to splitting the carb apart. (Because it passes through the bowl and body at an angle.) Likewise, you have to put it back in after you've reassembled the body and bowl.

Be sure and check the float for leaks. Just hold the float up to your ear and shake it. If you hear gas sloshing around inside the float, you must replace it.

These are very easy carbs to rebuild. Don't worry too much if you can't get all the orifices out. They've been in the carb for over forty years and won't come out without some heat. Just make sure all the pasageways are clear.

Make sure all the passage ways are clear. Use by hand only some number size drills, torch tip cleaner, or wire to run through to clean out. Then soak more and blow out with spray cleaner. If rusted bad have it cleaned by glass bead blasting but NO sand blasting. Sand can get stuck in holes and not come back out.

While the illustrated instructions at the link below are for an 8N carburetor, your's will be very similar.

Well you also need to have a gallion can of carb cleaner something like beemans, which has its own basket for soaking the parts in. You need to soak the parts at least over night if not for 24 hours. Its also good to have a couple cans of spray carb cleaner and an air compressor to blow out the passages.
