I want to speed up my generator to get a little more out of it at low engine RPM's. This is a 2N (1947) with the 6 volt generator. The tractor is many miles away. Is there an easy way to tell if the pulley is threaded or keyed so I will know what to get to change it?? I want to find one here in the city to take it to the farm next week. Thanks to all!!

Be prepared in the field for the pulley to threaded. Simply hold the fan belt real tight and take the nut off. Easier than splitt'N the genny.

I generally just squeeze the belt. Might want to soak up the nut and shaft good with penetrating oil. Maybe a little propane torch type heat, too.

Unless it has been changed over the years, it is likely threaded, BUT much time has passed, not to mention that Ford changed the generators 3 or 4 times during the first several years that 9's & 2's were mfg.
Next, your 3 brush gen should have an adjustment screw on the rear to set the output current. Have you tried that?
Next, if you have the output too high, you will overcharge the battery, outgas, boil over, make a mess & damage battery.
Next, read the 3rd & 4th paragraphs of this article on this site under Articles, Maintenance & Mechanical, TWO BRUSH GENS. Yes, I know the title is 2 brush, but it is the one to read about how 3 brush gen output falls OFF at higher RPMs. {linked below}

Generators are design to be self limiting at high speeds,you may end up with less output.Plus any charge rate over 5 amps is hard on batteries.It makes them gas and bubble,thats what makes all the acid corossion on battery cables and trays.
