My son advised me today that he had "BORROWED" a few pages from one of my Behlen Power Steering Manuals.

One of the borrowed pages does have some additional information about the #201 Behlen power steering pump that Nebraska Kirk used on his tractor.

It states: "These pumps are equipped with a spring- loaded differential piston-type relief valve. Pressure on this relief is pre-set at the factory at about 950psi".

I don't know if this is in an acceptable psi range for power steering systems or not.

Maybe I have been lucky, I have used these pumps without any problems with both the Char-Lynn and Behlen steering motors for the last 4 or 5 years(I'll keep my fingers crossed).

The link to the orginal post from Nebraska Kirk about the pump is below:

Thanks for the info. I ended up having to use a different torque unit. I had it all hooked up, started the tractor up, bled all the air out of the system, but the "power" in powersteering was not working :-( With full RPM I could feel it trying to help a little bit. I had another Behlen torque unit, so I just installed it. Hooked everything back up and now it works just as it should. Fingertip steering, even at idle :-)

My '50 M has the behlen live pump and power steering . There are no external relief valves. The resevoir is built into the torque motor. No problems with it so far other than losing the filler plug for the resevoir!

I know the Char-Lynn steering torque motor is rated to about 1000 psi max... much more and you can crack it open.

Thanks for the info and follow-up!

You sure could be right, I just don't know.

Never been around a system that was for power steering only on a tractor. They must have made 'em tho just as you say.

Thanks for the update/correction.

Allan

I did blow the end off of a "Char-Lynn" steering motor once.

It was plumbed up to a "M&W" Live pump on one of my H's.

I don't know what the psi rating is on that pump, but it musta been a little too much for the steering motor to handle.
