I'm looking at the manuals on Binder Books. There are 9 total for the Farmall H. Now, I don't have a hydraulic Lift-all... unless that's the thing attached to the left side underneath that I haven't identified, so I don't need the manuals for that I don't think. But without them, the total for the books is $140.35, plus $15.00 in shipping. (I worte them and asked about an Active Duty Military discount, but no answer) So, here is what they have. Can you all tell me what I NEED?

-Operators manual -Parts Catalog
-Service manual, engine and chassis
-Clutch service
-Clutch Adjustment
-Magneto service
-Serviceman's Guide to the Farmall H

Mike: Operator's Manual is your single most important manual. It gives everything you need for year around operation, adjustments, capacities, maintainance, etc. of your tractor. As one other person said, "Far beyond the average car or pickup of today."

Parts manuals are good as they give all parts with numbers, plus they give you a good idea of how a lot of things go together. I've figured out items from parts manual that IT damn well didn't tell you.

I'd say yes to the Service manual as long as it's the original IH service manual. I've had an IT service manual that covers both my Farmall 130 and 140, for some years now. I'd call it insufficient at best. Just 3 weeks ago at an Antique Farm Tractor show with flea market vendors, I stumbled onto a IH Blue Ribbon service manual for the 140, in like new condition for $8.00 I'll give you a bit of advice on fixen up old tractors, NEVER be in a hurry, it always costs you too much money.

The rest of the manuals you have listed are worth $0.50 per dozen, as the operators manual probably tells you everything in them.

Mike, this is the second time I have posted this for you. If you have fast server for your computer will save you some money for "H" parts manual.

I got it the first time Keith, thanks. But I would still like a printed version for the shop.

It's good that someone took the time to scan all that in, but it doesn't fit the screen -- unless I change the resolution, which I don't like to do. The best combination is a parts CD along with a printed manual.

CNKS, I just save picture to my computer, resize it to 8.5 x 11 then hit print.

ok, that helps. So the clutch specific and the magneto specifc aren't really needed because they are covered in other manuals, correct?

And what does I&T stand for? Instruction and Training was all I could come up with.

Read my response in the link -- these are the major manuals you will need. You can add others as the need arises.

Mike, the owners manual is the most important, it will tell you how to operate the tractor, and will also contain such things as service intervals, capacities of the radiator, engine oil , rear end/transmission,etc. It will also have the tune-up specs and give information on adjusting the valves and other periodic maintenance. Much, much, more information than is included in the owners manual for your car. The second most important would be the parts catalog. Not only does it give you the specific number for each part, but the exploded parts diagrams will be very helpful when performing any kind of restoration work even if you don't need new parts. Get the operators manual first, it is a necessity, the parts catalog could be considered somewhat of a luxury, but I can't imagine being without mine. The rest of the manuals may or may not become important. Just a little hint, those I&T manuals for the most part are very disappointing.

Contrary to Joe's recommendation (no offense intended Joe, just a difference of opinion), the Operator's manual is the one single solitary MUST HAVE for your tractor, especially if you're a tractor rookie. It includes many of the operation and safety procedures for this tractor, as well as lubrication guides, wiring diagrams, and other critical information. There's way more there than just telling you how to make the tractor move.

For ~$20, the I&T manual will give you a goodly amount of information on basic repairs and adjustments. The tractor isn't all that complicated, so if you're at all mechanically inclined, you can pretty much figure out how things come apart and go back together with the I&T and just by looking at the tractor.

Parts manuals are nice, but lots of paper and not really necessary. Your local Case IH dealer still has the parts manuals, and most parts can be readily identified (i.e. "I need a such-and-such for a Farmall H.").

Mike:
I totally agree with Nat 2. If I could afford only a few manuals, the operator's manual would be at the top of the list. Lots of important information. Hugh McKay taught me this a long time ago about my Super A's. He was right-on.

If you know how to operate and maintain the basic stuff then you don't need the first manual. In my opinion the parts and the service manual is a must if you’re going to maintain the machine yourself.

Wow, I didn't mean the operator manual was usless, only that if you knew what was there the other manuals really helped me restore better.

Sorry,

I don't know how to even turn the tractor on! And I've never driven one on my own! (Dad helped me when I was a kid)

There isn't an accelerator pedal... just a clutch pedal!

I better find a big field before I wreck! lol

I"ve restored a Cub and am presently working on a 340U. I"ve found you really don"t know what reference materials you need . . . till you need them. Even the Operator"s Manual - sure, you don"t need instructions on how to operate a tractor, but there have been times I found it handy because they list fluid capacities, tire pressures, tire width positions, photos of features and controls and wire routings that may provide different views than you may find elsewhere. The whole package is expensive, but when you"re starting out with nothing to work from it"s an excellent investment for the future. I"ve particularly found the Parts Manuals" invaluable because they provide blowups of major components - not only handy when you need to order a part (keeps you from having to rely entirely on a counter man) but also can be a huge help when you need to put it all back together again!

I have the previous Gaines Book on Classic Tractors: in my opinion it is a "coffee table" book - it has really beautiful photos - but it doesn"t really show how to do anything. I"ve never referred to it after the first time I opened it. To my dismay, I later found my library had a copy. You may wish to try you library first.

Mike - I also agree with Paul W; the Gaines book, "How to Restore Classic Farmall Tractors", really tells you nothing about HOW to do what must be done. It tells you want to do, but you can see that from looking at your new aquisition. It was a bit of a disappointment to me. I did not feel it was worth the money. Others may feel differently.
