Hello,

I need to replace a engine in a Farmall A, I was wondering what type of block/engine will fit. my old blocke is cracked and cannot be repaird, but we beleive that the internails are still fine. What kind of block owr whole engine will fit? We think a block/whole engine from an A,B,C will work. Will the supers work?

Thanks

As others have said, if you just want a will-fit replacement, anything up to the 130/230 will do. If you want identical, you need to look for the A/B/BN engine.

The changes I can think of at the moment (working off the (6342) A/B baseline) are:

-all the crankshafts (in this range) should interchange;
-any block after the A/B will have the front bolster bolt by the hydraulic pump threaded in the block expecting the bolt to come through from the bolster side (opposite of A/B);
-early Super A/C (251069) sleeves should interchange with yours;
-late Super A/Super C/100/200 (354898) sleeves will not interchange;
-130/230 (366204) sleeves should interchange with yours. (I should say aftermarket sleeve&piston sets here; there has been concern posted on whether the factory ones are interchangeable and I haven't taken the time to get to the bottom of that yet.)

The casting numbers (in parhentheses, and located behind the oil filters) should be used rather than the tractor the engine is on at the moment, and as Hugh mentioned, be aware some of the blocks have been modified internally. Ref this thread for some more info:

The basic block supposedly never changed from 1939 until end of C production All Super C from beginning and Super A after serial number 310300 have the new C-123 block. So that should include all A, B, C and SA before serial 310300.

However you should be aware the block part number did change a few times even in that group, may not make any difference but as old said there are different part numbers, so something must be different. Even if you find a block with same part number as yours, you still have to check out the fact someone may have done a rebore, to acomodate oversize sleeves.

Safest bet is take the old block when shopping, make sure it is exactly the same.

Old, couple of days ago I put a post on about baler engine fitting Super C, was informed then that Super C and Super A were the same. So why wouldn't the A and C be the same? Son's Super C has the 123 ci...

They maybe but as I said I'm not sure that they are or aren't. LOL But I can say this a catalog I have gives differant numbers for the C and super A then it does the A and B. So there most be something about them that are differant.

Well as per the catalog the A and B engine has casting code 6342 and the C and Super A has casting code 251069. Now how that makes them differant I don't know but some how they are.

The C and Super A both have hydraulic pumps & the C block could be fitted with a water pump. I think the late model Super A's had or could be fitted with one too. Hal

I believe those models used the C-113 engine. Maybe you could find a good used block from a tractor salvage yard and reuse your blocks internal parts.
