How hard is it to time a Super A? What is the method ? Oil Pressure. When I start mine up it runs at normal then drops down to 5. What is wrong and how do I fix it? Spark Plugs: When I look at then after running for a while they look wet and carboned up. What is wrong?

Since no one else came back on the oil pressure I will. Pull the pan off (it probably has a thick layer of gunk that needs to be cleaned out anyway) then remove the bottom plate from the oil pump.

This plate is probably no longer perfectlly flat from ware and tear. Get some emery paper and a very flat surface and go to work sanding it down to a perfectlly flat surface.

Or take it to a machine shop and have them true up the surface. Be sure to get a new gasket from CIH to reassemble it with. This is the thinest gasket you have ever seen.

You should see a marked improvement in your oil pressure.

The question of timing pops up often so I typed this up a long time ago so all I have to do is cut'n'paste. This was for my Super A but will work for any engine with similar instructions.-----

If yours is a distributor& coil ignition, heres how to set the timing:
Align the timing mark located on the flywheel with the mark on the housing
so that #1 is at TDC. The timing mark is a line with "D-C" & "1-4" on
either side. Its is very faint and may be hard to find if you flywheel is
dirty. Use a flashlight and wipe off the outer part of the flywheel. You
will be suprised at how tiny the mark is. Remove the spark plugs and have
a helper turn the engine with a crank. Feel for compression building up on
#1 plug hole and that will help you in locating timing mark. The indicator
is on the housing at the very bottom. You can see all this through the
hole on the bottom of the clutch housing. Once this is done, make sure the
distributor's rotor is pointing toward #1 plug wire. If it's not, remove
and reinstall the distributor so that it is. Now retard the timing by rotating the
distributor in the same direction that the cam rotates so that the points
are closed. Turn on ignition and with the hot/center wire of the coil near a ground, advance
the timing by rotating the distributor back the other way slowly until the
points just open and a spark occurs. (the distributor sparks when points
open) Lock the distributor down there. Since the engine is a TDC and the
point just opened and a spark occured, you now know your timing is exactly
at 0 degrees TDC. This is the correct setting for your engine and the rest
of the timing advance occurs in the distributor with the mechanical
advance.

coil or magneto? Old engine, worn clearances, try 10W40 or 15W40 oil. Wet spark plugs- maybe worn rings or valve guides or running rich or any combination of this. Try a little hotter plug. Might help keep the crud burned off.
