Well I'm am a Ford Parts man for over 30 years. I own 2 Rangers, guys have put out some good points, haven't heard many of the bad ones so I am asuming no one from the north east rust belts have replied. I only know from my side of the counter it's tough to wear our a 4cyl ranger, we have many with well over 200K on them, but they don't look good here in Pa. I personally like the 3.0 V6 just because they too have been trouble free, but I like the power of the 4.0 much better on these Pa Hills. My 3.0 will only give me 21.5 in the summer But I love the trk. The 4.0 in the summer get 19.5 to 20, both have 3.73 axle ratio. My Choice for the 3.0 would be a 4.10, both are 5speeds.. Both have 125K roughly. I've never touched the 3.0, but the 4.0 I didn't buy new & have replaced the engine. Without proper oil changes & without a new theromstat in a 4.0 every year they will get into your pocket. As for 3.0 & 2.5 they are bullet proof... I just wish they didn't use salt on Pa. Roads.. Both of mine are in good shape only because I wash them high pressure twice a year underneath & spray them with used motor oil/rear axle oil underneath & inside the doors.. Makes a mess but it's the only way they won't rust apart.
