If you are talking about Windows XP and/or blue-screen-of-death, you better back up any information you want to save right away.
You should never see those types of messages and usually indicates malware/virus damage, hardware possibly failing, or more rarely, a corrupted or bad device driver.
If you can get a clue of which application is causing it, sometimes you can just remove it or disable it and be OK...
