January 31 was officially the last day of existence for an insurance company that had occupied 13 of the last 16 years of my life.
The sad part is, if El Presidente had stayed home, kept his nose to the grindstone, and listened to the advice and concerns of us underlings instead of jetting around the country checking out golf courses, the company might still be going strong. When I started with the company, seven of us were the entire company. I saw it grow to 240 employees and there were four remaining when I left for good. By the time I left, no one else, president included, had more time with the company than I.
I won't mention any names, but the president was once starting quarterback for the Nebraska Cornhusker football team.
I stopped in yesterday. My key still opened the door, but inside was nothing but bare walls, including my old office. There was, however, a carton of microwave popcorn I'd left in one of the cupboards in the kitchen.
But, no point in dwelling on the past. At least I'm still employed elsewhere.
