Just got a newsletter in the mail from the Department of Environmental Conservation, explaining the new regs for firewood. Pretty amazing. This stuff never stops.
I'm supposed to carry paperwork, proving origin of wood, when I cut wood from my own property, go down the road a few miles, and drop it off at my farm. Thank you Chuck Schumer, et. al. Maybe I can blame it on Michigan too. NY blames Michigan for bringing in pests here.
My 66 acre wood-lot is 2 miles from my house if I use the public road.
I also have a two wood lots 120 miles from here. Sometimes when I'm coming back home with an empty truck, I fill it with wood, that otherwise goes unused. Now I see I can get arrested for doing that.
Here's the stuff:
A REGULATION is in effect that prohibits the import of firewood into New York unless it has been heat treated to kill pests. The regulation also limits the transportation of untreated firewood to less than 50 miles from its source
For firewood not purchased (i.e. cut from your own property) you must have a Self-Issued Certificate of Source (PDF, 100 kB), and it must be sourced within 50 miles of your destination
Only firewood labeled as meeting New York's heat treatment standards to kill pests (kiln-dried) may be transported into the state and further than 50 miles from the firewood's source. Acceptable firewood heat treatment must raise the core temperature of the firewood to 71 degrees C, or 160 degrees F, and hold it there for at least 75 minutes. Most "kiln-drying" processes that reduce the moisture content to less than 18% achieve this sterilization standard.
NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION (6/08) (in accordance with 6NYCRR Section 192.5) Self-Issued Certificate for Transport and Possession of New York-Sourced Untreated Firewood for Personal Use In accordance with 6 NYCRR Section 192.5, Firewood Restrictions to Protect Forests from Invasive Species, persons who cut and transport Untreated Firewood, from a New York source, for personal use must complete and possess a Self-Issued Certificate of Source from the Department. 1. Name of transporter: 2. Street Address, City, State, Zip Code: 3. Source of transported firewood (Village, Town or City): 4. Destination of firewood being transported: 5. Approximate volume being transported (cords, face cords, cubic feet, truckload, etc.): I understand that this Untreated Firewood shall not be moved more than 50 miles from its source (as determined according to the regulation). I further understand, under the regulation, that no person shall transport Untreated Firewood into New York State from any other State or country. I hereby affirm that under penalty of perjury that information provided on this form and all attachments submitted herewith is true to the best of my knowledge and belief. False statements made herein are punishable as a Class A misdemeanor pursuant to Section 210.45 of the Penal Law.
