: : : : : : : Okay, I just purchased a 59" belly mower for my 47 Cub. It came off of a Cub with fasthitch, (which mine doesn't have), but I was able to bolt it on my Cub by removing my drawbar. Everything hooked up okay, but does it ever work like crap. I can barely get the clutch out with pto engaged without killing my engine. I can't hardly spin this thing. I did get it going and tried mowing with it and it just plain bogs down in any kind of mowable grass when I let it down all the way. I really can't believe that Woods would have made something for this tractor that performs so poorly, so I am leaning towards the possibility that I have something wrong. This deck came off of a Cub and the guy mowed with it for years and sadi it worked fine for him. I helped take it off of his tractor, so I know I put it on right. Does anyone have any idea what might be my problem?? Maybe the belt is too tight or something?? Please help. I am very frustrated with this thing. If I can't get it to work any better than this then it will be for sale again in the near future!! Thanks for any help.

: : : : : : Sounds like the belt could be routed wrong which is causing it to work against itself. Try having the guy you bought it from look at it. Is your engine strong (powerful). Are you using the correct diameter drive pulley. Check these items and let us know it it works. Good luck.

: : : : : Well, I am using the same pulleys as came with it, I assume they are the right ones. I will check the belt routing, but we did tie the rear part of the belt together with string so as not to get it messed up when I reinstalled it. The motor was rebuilt, so it should be strong. I have a blade for the front that I use for snow and light dirt removal and it seems to have good power. I will check the belt again and make sure it is right. I didn't remove the front part that routes through the blade pulleys, just loosened the rear idlers and removed the belt from the tractor, so it should be okay. Will check and verify.

: : : : Is your governor kicking in OK? If not, your engine will bog down. I have a 5 foot IH mower on my Cub and it handles it OK. I usually cut in first gear, and you do have to do some clutch slipping when first starting out because the engine is trying to get everything moving at the same time. You also may have to tweak your carb. a little bit, because the strain of the mower deck is different than any other load you've probably put on the engine. Keep us posted.
: : : One more thing if everything else is OK. Check the pitch of the deck, the front of the blades should be slightly lower than the rear. You would be surprised at how much difference this proper adjustment makes. Also be aware that a cub with an L59 is going to be a shade underpowered no matter what.
: : : Curt

: : The governor seems to work fine, I didn't check the pitch of the deck, it seems that it is almost completely flat when I lower it though. I didn't know it should be lower than the front. Will check that as well. My father-in-law is coming over tonight to look at it, maybe I can have some more info tomorrow. I can tell you that in the rear, (from the deck to the idlers) I have a 3/4 twist in the left belt, the right side has a 1/4 twist. I am sure that is what the woods manual said it should be, but I will check again. Will I always have to mow in first gear with this deck?? Could I mow in second if I had a 48 inch deck?? Also, this deck discharges grass from both sides, is this right?? It is open on either side. Maybe they are all like that, I don't know.

: There is a removeable side shield on both sides of the deck. For a L59 you should leave the left one off. This will make the grass discharge and help your power situation. Take the advise and verify that the front of the blades are 1/8 of an inch or so lower than the rear. What is the blade height set at. 2- 2 1/4 is about right. Lower than this required more power. Woods recommends a 12 hp minimum for an L59. I would guess a Cub to have 10 - 12 hp. You can mow, but mow slowly. Double check that all three of your blades are rotating counter clockwise. Just for reference, my Farmall A pulls a L59 in 3rd gear normally, 2nd in heavy grass, and 1st in very tall grass (mowing the barn yard). Good luck, and keep up posted of your progress.

MAN DO I FEEL LIKE A SH&*HEAD!!! Have you ever done something you just can't believe you did?? Something that you know better! Well I've overlooked the obvious....(no laughing now!)....I was out working on this thing for over an hour last night aligning and checking and trying and changing and everything I could think of. Nothing was working, then I thought, well as a last resort I'll check the routings of the belt one more time to make sure it it on right and twists are all correct. I started at the rear right and followed the belt around the first (right side) deck pulley, then around to the center pulley, everything is good, got to the left pully and noticed the belt was hitting the deck where it shouldn't have been, got around to the opening on the pulley guard and WHAM! There was my problem. The belt was not riding on the pulley, it was riding on the pulley shaft. What an idiot I felt like. The first thing that popped into my mind was "oh great, now I have to post a response on YT telling them this!! Then I thought, nah, better think of something else to tell them.......BUT being the honest soul I am, I'm spilling my guts afterall!! Anyway. I loosened the belt put it on the pulley and was mowing (in 2nd gear even!) in a matter of minutes. It works like a charm! Oh well, as stupid as I feel, at least it is working and that's the important thing! Anyway, thanks to all of you who recommended things to check and gave me ideas. I do appreciate eveyone's efforts. Also, my blades are all turning clockwise as my pto turns counter clockwise, the entry above states the blades should be turning counter clockwise, is this right for a Cub?? I know many of the Cubs pto's turn backwards compared to the bigger tractors. The blades are turning in the right direction for cutting. Should I have the end cover plate on one side of my deck or is it okay to leave them both open?? I didn't get a cover plate when I bought the deck from the guy, but I could call him and see if he had once for it. Thanks once again for everyones help! Next time I will be a little more careful! You know how it is when you get something new though, I was too excited to get going and got sloppy I guess! ....Guy

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
