thinking about the tractor in the link. 1972 with 8250 hours. Local dealers are Case/IH and Fendt but new parts are plentiful and very reasonable (compared to IHC, JD, and Fendt of the era). Picked up a hay feeder on the weekend and the guy had a 2000 that they bought new with 10k hours. Said the major repairs on it was frt end (king pin?) bushings and a couple regulators and a battery. The ad for this one says "motor smokes". Looking at 2 of the pictures you can see white/grey smoke. I know this is a wide open question, but how major could that be (best/worst case)?
