Here in Canada we all contribute to "Employment Insurance" as well as our employers. We have deductions off of each pay period for the program.About 45 years ago I was working in a factory, got laid off and I collected for a few weeks until we got called back. I became a teacher and paid in for over 30 years never collecting once.
I went to work in a friend's auto shop when I retired from teaching. I was drawing a pension and working outside of education. When the shop was closed I went to the Employment insurance office and explained everything to them. They saw no reason why I couldn't collect because I was available, willing and ready to work. I collected for 22 weeks. I paid into the plan for over 40 years and I didn't feel one bit guilty about collecting for the 22 weeks. I still wanted to work and as far as the Employment office was concerned I was elligible.
Don't fret about collecting, you and or your employer has been paying in all these years just for the reason you find yourself in now. You obviously want to work, you are not a shiftless slacker, but a young man with a family wanting to work! I hope the lay off is short lived and I hope you get called back soon. Good luck..and being Mr Mom isn't all bad. Do as much as you can around the house for your wife and you will both come out of this unscathed!( Yeah ya gotta vacuum too!
Good luck, you are not alone and remember you are entitled to unemployment insurance until you are on your feet again!
