These old beet boxes originated back in the days before trucks even had hydraulics.
The frame of the box is built on a scissor arrangement, which can dump to either side, lifted via a set of heavy hooks above each tire.
The dumping pits back in the day would use two lines, one dumping left and one emptying right. They had a cable lift to grab and lift those hooks. Lots of bulk and tonnage and by opening/lifting the whole side of the truck, the load could be dumped in the blink of an eye.
Never heard of one coming over, but yeah, don't think you would wanna lift 'er without yanking the side chains first. :>)
This old truck was set up originally with three sets of hydraulics; side dump for beets, rear dump for grains and the hydraulic over electric to drop and close the sides.
