I had a K&N air filter on my truck. When I went to clean it, I noticed that all the cotton had moved away from the valleys. I could literally see my hand through the filter at those points. Given that the primary job of an air filter is to filter air, I threw it in the garbage and went back to paper filters. At least they filter air!
