As usual confusion,frustration, loss of productivity extra time & money is the result of trying to take a cheap/easy short cut.
On occassion a 6V to 12V conversion can be justified but 99.99% of the time it's a crutch fix. Generaly to compensate for poor starting from high resistance starter connections, worn engine or carburation/ignition that requires rebuilding.
Plus an alternator hung on a "restored" antique is a pretty good clue to how "restored" it is.
Kenneth at Classic Generator or other reputable shops can rebuild generators for simialar prices of a conversion without the confusion.
Toss the alternator in the corner, rebuild the factory generator with a 12V regulator if you insist on 12V. Obtain a smaller driven pulley, adjust the cutout to just open when the engine is down or at slowest idle. Set the regulator to 14.5V measured at the battery during fast idle.
A 6v volt system has a nominal voltage of 6.3V at rest. Under sized battery & high resistance connections will cut cranking power to 1/2 when starter winding voltage drops to 4.45V .
