We got 1 1/2" of rain on Wed. afternoon/evening, and the feilds are still too wet to get out and plant corn. So instead we decided to start up hay, and with anyluck try to get it all off in the next 3 days. I started cutting today after replacing the suction and bypass lines going to the PTO pump on our hydra-swing haybine (14' wide Hesston 1014+2). Cut 5 acres right next to the barn just to make sure it was working ok, and then after supper went to a feild we're buying the hay from and started cutting.
Lets just say it's thick. Really thick. Was seeded last year with clover and alfalfa, and the conditions were just right the last few weeks and it took off like a shot. Gotta go in 3rd low on our Massey 285, and then 1/2 the time need to have the multi-power pulled back. Espescially when going back up the ravine. Actually saw some smoke roll from the stack on the 285, which is a fairly rare occurance for it anymore, and not to mention while cutting hay. I think the feild is somewhere around 12-15 acres, and I'm still not done. I cut for about 3 hours until I plugged twice from the excess dew and residual moisture in the hay from the rain. Unplugged it the last time but still have a little in the crimper rolls I need to dig out.
Did I mention that the chopper and one of our wagons isn't ready yet?? We were gonna work on them during the week and then do the hay next weekend but the plans have changed. Need to reline the chopper's spout with plastic, fix busted wood under the wagon, and then put the repaired tandem underneath it yet. I still have about 30 acres or so left to cut too. Small for some, but not for us. I belive we can do it, it's just gonna take some skill and well planned days. Hopefully nothing breaks....
Just trying to wind down a little before crawling in bed. Lots to do the next couple days.
