Laws vary from state to state. In NC, the small claims court has jurisdiction up to at least $3000.00 ( limit may be higher now). The bad check is all the evidence needed in this proceeding. Civil judgement is entered on the record and is good for 10 years. If not collected in the 10 years, the unsatisfied judgment itself becomes evidence for one renewal of judment for an additional 10 years. Filing for the renewal MUST be done before the 10 years expires. I did mine the day before expiration. I have collected every judgment I ever got. One took 16 years. I got 6% per year simple interest for most of those years- no compounding, still glad to collect. Turns out the guy became an heir in an undivided estate and the others got worried about the unsatisfied judgment being a problem for their shares, too. Check up on the laws in MI and go after the bum!
