Constantly ringing ears is one of the symptoms of Meniere's Disease. Other symptoms include a full feeling in the inner ear, progressive deafness and worsening balance, which often includes episodes of vertigo that can last hours, or even for days. Vertigo is the sensation of incredible dizziness and motion, even when you KNOW that your surroundings are really not moving. It is really awful and puts you on the ground.

I have had Meniere's for more than 15 years. It ended up causing me to take an early, medical retirement because sometimes I just plain could not perform, or do anything besides vomit very well. I have had 2 operations to try to get the vertigo to stop happening, but they didn't seem to help. Neither have any of the medications or dietary restrictions. I would say that getting out of my high stress job helped the vertigo episodes to get less numerous.

But my left ear has rung constantly for at least 15 years and I am almost completely deaf in that ear now, although loud sounds on that side are quite painful. I don't think much about the ringing most of the time--I guess I have learned to tune it out pretty well. But it does bother me when there are several tones going at the same time and they are dissonant. Kind of like several trumpets playing very high tones while being badly out of tune with each other. And the ringing sometimes bothers me when I am trying to go to sleep.

Luckily, my right ear doesn't have too bad hearing. It rings sometimes too, but not constantly. I no longer can tell which direction a sound is coming from, and the "stereo effect" is something I no longer hear. But I am thankful that I have not gone completely deaf, and sure pray that the Meniere's will not progress to my right ear.

Unfortunately the doctors cannot say what causes Meniere's. I am the only one in my large extended family to have it, and it is not believed to be genetic. It may be one of the auto-immune problems or it could be after effects of much earlier ear infections. I suspect that running vehicles at high speeds with the window down might have caused damage, and I also did some shooting without ear protection years ago. And I did a lot of field work when I was a kid with pretty loud tractors and no ear protection. I am sure a heck of a lot more careful with my hearing than I used to be!

But by all means I suggest that you have the problem studied by a good ENT specialist. Maybe they might actually be able to help you, or at least ease your concerns. I wish you good luck and hope your ear ringing just goes away...or if it doesn't go away, that you learn to tune the ringing noise out.
