Hi Chris (and everyone else),

I am the one with the problem (Glen 7580). Good guess on the Farmall. Mine is a 130. It works just as you describe and is an extremely handy machine for many of my small jobs. I even have it rigged to handle a 5’ Bush Hog using my 2 point hitch. The belly system could handle a belly mounted finishing mower (which I don’t have). The belly blade is very handy!

To the problem at hand.

As I mentioned in a previous post the two relevant operator cabin levers are called: The Traction Booster and The Position Control Lever in the Allis Chalmers 7580 Operator’s Manual.

The Position Control works as it should in the no load situation but when I load the blade (using forward motion in clay) the blade rises. As far as I know it should hold position. This suggests to me that the “hold” valve is leaking by.

Comments anyone?

I have found two more paragraphs in the manual that shed some light on the draft control part of my problem .

“SENSITIVITY ADJUSTMENT (figure 39)
The sensing arm that is attached to torsion bar right hand arm has 3 holes to accept the rod guide. Figure 39 shows the rod guide in the center hole. This is (the) position used for average draft loads. For heavy draft loads it may be desirable to place rod guide in hole closest to torsion bar. This reduces the amount of lift arm motion induced by the Traction Booster system as the draft load fluctuates. For light draft loads the rod guide can be moved to the outer hole to increase lift arm motion with less load fluctuation.”

I will be out to the farm tomorrow (I hope) to have a look at which hole the rod guide is in.

Just before the above item in the “ADJUSTMENTS” section is the following.

“TORSION BAR PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT (figure 38)
For proper Traction Booster operation the torsion bar preload must be kept in adjustment. Check periodically by pushing forward and pulling back on the draft arms. If any lost motion or looseness is felt, adjust the torsion bar as follows.

1. Remove all load from the draft arms by unhitching from the implement.

2. Loosen the jam hut on preload adjusting screws in lower side of right hand and left hand torsion bar arms. Turn screws in approximately 2 turns tightly against tractor frame.

3. Back screws out until they are just finger tight. Hold screws in this position and tighten jam nuts against face of torsion bar arms."

I will have a look at this too.
