These farmers went into the high dessert and tried to turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse. The land in question wasn’t fit to farm in the first place. If it weren’t for irrigation, it would have been 100% impossible to farm this ground. Now, there is a severe shortage of water in Oregon, and these farmers act like this issue is coming at them out of the blue. They made the decision to farm very poor quality land; they need to live with the consequences. By withholding this irrigation water, they are ensuring the survival of the fish species in question. After all, how many more wildlife species do we want to drive to extinction?

At the same time the government is withholding irrigation water to those farmers, they have closed the dams on the Columbia River, which prevents the salmon from spawning. You see, the government is trying to balance the good of the people with the good of wildlife. It’s not as if they have made a blanket rule to save wildlife at the cost of the people. They are trying to fill the dams they best can, as these dams are the primary source of electricity for this area. As is, the area will probably be forced to endure the same type of rolling black outs suffered by California.
