seems to me like 2 differrnt methods of compensation for bearing wear are being confused here . with poured babbit bearings shims are REMOVED to make the bearing bore smaller to fit the journel (an accepted practice)....(shims were added between bearing halves before the bearings were poured for this purpose) .(connecting rods are not the only place poured bearings were used ). shimming is to ADD shims behind insert bearing to make the bore smaller. (not recommended ) .if your motor has a splash oiling system for the rod bearing the way you adjust the clearence is remove shims until you can't move the rod side to side by hand but by taping the rod very lightly with a small hammer it will move to the other side.....now if your crankshaft is grooved ,rough or out of round i don't think this or plastigage will cure your problem . bill b va.
