I was an E1 in 1953 and the gross monthly was a good bit more that $32. I believe you had some things taken out of your pay to get it down to that level. This can all be researched but, as I recall, E1 pay, in my day was about $76 per month. When I eventually made PFC (1954) it was around $96. Bear in mind, I was single, they gave me a roof over my head (quite a bit of the time made of canvas), 3 meals a day, and clothing (either suntan khaki or OD). To get to the $32 figure you'd have to go back to pre WWII (THE BIG ONE).
