Install and use the best coolant type heater you can buy. Drape a tarp over the entire hood, cover front and sides, hold on with rubber bunge cords around the underside of engine area. Like you said, use winter blend diesel fuel. This is #2 diesel fuel (heavy) mixed about 10%-30% with Kerosene. Have good batteries. Before winter, clean and tighten all battery connections as well as starter cable connections. Use 10W-30 oil in crankcase, for real cold conditions use 5W-20 or 5W-30 or straight 10W (yes, detergent oil)- all oil rated for diesel. Disconnect hydraulic pump load on engine before starting (JD has this feature on there main hyd pumps - their method reduces the pump stroke to zero). Use electrical timer to turn on the block heater at lease 2 hours before you start tractor (I set for 3:00 or 4:00am) Put all gear changes in neutral, depress clutch peddle, advance throttle about 1/4 - 1/3 open, turn key or push starter button. If exhaust shows signs of combustion puffs KEEP starter going. Only let off starter after full exhaust noise is comming out of pipe or time exceeds 15 - 20 seconds. Use ether Only after doing all above and then only in emergency. Do Not use ether. Keep the tarp cover on even during operation to mantain proper operating tempurature. regards, Wisconsin, USA
