A few years ago, I was fooling around with my '48 John Deere GW, it wasn't running just right so I parked it in the driveway in front of the garage, left it in 2nd and shut it off by turning off the gas. I then pulled off the carb and cleaned it out because there was some "slop" showing up in the sediment bowl from the residue in the fuel tank. Well, I put the carb back on, checked for leaks-okay, and decided to fire her up again. I pulled the throttle open 'bout a third and engaged the starter while standing on the ground on the flywheel side. Yep, she lit the first flip and I about-you know-my pants. God took over and I somehow reached through and yanked the clutch back without getting run over. The garage rollup door nailed both stacks about 8 inches down and bent them back about 30 degrees, the muffler at the flange and the intake at the bottom of the cutouts. The next 2 hours were spent straightening the stacks and thanking God it wasn't worse. Now every time I start any tractor I remember that little experience.
