Just as with many things, with funerals, you can spend a little or a lot... depending on what you're willing to do and what kind of a ceremony you want. We searched on line and found a casket for my dad for $3500 LESS than the funeral home wanted for their IDENTICAL casket. There are various services that the funeral home will offer, but are not required. Locally, an obit can cost as much as $750 to $1,000 -or- the funeral home can run a short paragraph with their weekly listings for no charge. The thing to remember is that the funeral home is running a FOR PROFIT business (and on many items they sell, they make a LOT!!!). The secret is to plan ahead... go talk to the funeral director and learn what you need to know BEFORE everyone is worked up into an emotional state. If you plan ahead you'll save thousands of dollars, and still have a very nice service. At first, it seems kinda weird checking into all this stuff, but, it has to be done at some point... I think it's better to tackle it while the family is still in a rational frame of mind. My point is, you probably won't even need the insurance if you plan effectively. Is either of your folks a veteran? If so, don't overlook those benefits either. My best advice... don't be afraid to ask questions! HTH ...D
