Andy, as two pop says the motorcraft alternator needs an external regulator and the extra terminal is STA for stator. To use this alt on a system with an amp guage 1 the reg A+ terminal is wired to battery voltage that is always on. 2 the reg S terminal is wired to have battery power only when the switch is on. 3 The reg F terminal is connected to the FLD terminal on the alternator. 4 the STA terminal on the alt and and the I terminal on the reg are not used with an amp guage system. If you want to use a motorcraft alt on a system with a charge light. 1 hook the charge light in the wire between ign switch and the regulator I terminal so it has power only when the switch is on. 2 hook the A+ reg terminal to battery voltage that is always on. 3 hook the reg S terminal to the STA terminal on the alt. 4 hook the reg F terminal to the FLD terminal on the alt. In either case make sure the regulator is grounded The solid state regulators are smaller and hold more constant voltage than the old mechanical ones.
