Yesterday I called a lender in Oklahoma, got one of those robotic answerers where you say what you want to do, and no matter what you say, it doesn't understand. You finally just press random numbers until it locks it up and a human has to rescue the system.
Contrast in the '50's, when my grandma lived in a small town where they didn't have dial phones yet, everything went thru the operator (Grandma's phone no. was 96X). You called her by dialing 0, asking for the Yelm operator, and when she came on, either ask for 96X or grandma by name (didn't matter which). We called one time, and operator said "I just saw your grandma go by with her shopping bag- I think she went to Wolfe's (the "supermarket")- Why don't you try again in about an hour, she should be home by then." (She was).
