Alternator Update

To All Concerned,

I want to thank each and everyone of you that responded to my questions on the "One Wire Alternator" on my John Deere MT. Well, here is a update for you. I took the old alternator to Auto Zone and let them check it. It did not work the fist couple of times he tested it. Then all of the sudden it took off working. Well, I did not want to chance that. So, for a mere $31.00 I purchased one with a lifetime promise to work! Right! Anyway, we tested it and it worked fine. I took it home and put it on. I hooked wires up and presto, it did not work! I checked and then double checked still no juice. I took it back and had them retest it. It still worked fine. I took it home again and put it back on. This time I started tracing wires. Well, I had said that someone had wired it and I did not think they knew much about wiring. I was right. First of all I could not use my facoty switch as they said it was bad, and had put a toggle switch in for the ignition. I had taken the gas tank off so I could replace the temp. guage and also was putting in a voltmeter to replace the bad ampmeter. Well, I took the switch out and started tracing it with an ohmmeter. There was nothing wrong with it! So, I took out a bunch of their old wiring and used just what was needed. I then rewired the alternator. Guess what? It works.

Now this is where I stand. I do not want to put an idiot light in. If I hook the light up, and I did for a short time, everything works good. Except, when I shut it off, it keeps running until I disconnect the light. Here is the diode some of you told me about. However, I took it out for a test run this afternoon and what I did was to start it, then touch the light wire to the battery and start it charging. I then took the wire clear off the tractor (did not want any shorts) and it keeps charging as long as the engine is kept running. I am thinking about, since my MT has no lights, of using the light terminal of the switch to hook that wire to so I can turn it to the lights to start it charging.

If I run that wire to the switch (not light) and put a diode in it, will I have to put a light or resistor in?
