I can understand folks concern with railroads abandoning track, but there may be another side to the coin. It's true that railroads aren't very interested in single boxcar shipments. It may be that the costs to move that single boxcar shipment may be more than what the railroad can charge due to rate regulations or they may be more than what the shipper would want to pay. As far as the branch lines in granger country go it seems that many of these lines really don't carry much traffic except at one or two fairly short time periods per year. The down side is that it costs to maintain these lines to decent condition, and I'm suspicous that the meager amount of traffic generated and received on these lines just can't support the costs of maintenance. A railroad is a pretty expensive thing to operate. The railroad may not be able to make enough profit on it's other lines to support these lightly used rail lines. Can you expect the railroad to operate at a deficit? None of us like to lose money. Should the government step in and support maintaining these lightly used lines? Do the taxpayers want to pay to maintain these lines? Interesting questions. Anyone have any more input?
