I used to work on imported cars that required motor oil in the transmission. Occasionally a car would come in that someone had put 90wt gear lube "transmission oil" in the transmission. I've never understood why, but the gear lube would cause the bronze bushings ,syncro rings, and shift forks to wear almost like they had no oil at all. At the same time, there are many other transmissions that also have bronze parts, use 90wt gear lube, and live a long happy life. It must have to do with the particular alloy of bronze used. Machine tools and industrial equipment(especially older units) often specify heavy weight, non-gear lube types of oils. I'm told that using gear lube in these units has the same effect I've observed in the car transmissions. That being the case, I would use the type of lube specified by the manufacturer unless someone can PROVE to you that something else is better. The motor oil being made today is many times better that what was available whan most of our tractors were new. So if motor oil was up to the job when your tractor was new, it is going to do an even better job today. The heavy motor oil you need is a standard item for older Harley-Davidson motor cycles(old equipment again), so it isn't too hard to find. Maybe a mulit-weight oil would eliminate the need to change oil for each season of the year? Hope this answeres your question....Al English

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
