It appears to me that the US consumer wants a diesel car ONLY if cheap, real fast, gets fantastic fuel mileage, and starts and runs like a gas-powered car.
There were many excellent little diesel cars and light trucks offered over the years and none sold well.
Jeep sold a 1968 version with a Perkins.
Jeep sold a diesel version Cherokee in 2007.
Mazda sold a B2200 truck with a Perkins diesel 1980.
International sold a Scout 1977-1980 with a Nissan (turbo and non-turbo).
Dodge sold a 1/2 ton truck with a Misubishi 6 cylinder diesel in 1979.
Checker sold a diesel car in 1968 that was Perkins powered.
Ford sold Escorts, Ranger trucks, etc. with Mazda/Perkins and Misubishi diesels (turbo and non-turbo).
Chevy sold Chevettes, LUVs, and S10s with Isuzu diesels. Also sold the many 1/2 trucks with 6.2 diesels.
I could also mention the many GM diesel cars in the 70s with the awful Oldsmobile diesels - but they were just that - awful.
Dodge sold little mini Ram trucks with Misubishi turbo and non-diesels.
Isuzu sold cars and mini-trucks with diesels, turbo and non-turbo.
I still have and drive many, including two 1981 diesel Chevettes, a 1985 4WD diesel Isuzu PUP mini-truck, a diesel ford Ranger, and an army of 6.2 diesel Chevy Blazers and trucks.
Um, a lot of us who are going out and buying new cars right now weren't alive let alone driving for a lot of those. Capitalism is based on supply and demand. Why would a company put tons of money into research, production, marketing etc. if they don't need to? If a consumer wants a diesel but one is not available, they will buy a gas model instead. To a car manufacturer that is fine with them. If they were choosing not to buy a vehicle at all, that would be a problem worth fixing.
My wife and I own a 2000 VW Beetle TDI that gets around 50 mpg all day long. When we went out a year and a half ago to buy me a commuter car it would have been nice to find a 4 door commuter (like a Jetta) with a diesel option. Unfortunately none were available within our price range. We bought a gas model 5 spd instead. To a car manufacturer, no harm no foul. We bought a car didn't we?
