Hi Lance, Your starter is not in alignment with the ring gear and thats why it's hanging on engagement and disengaugement, and is also why your ring gear teeth are getting chewed. Rather than try to type the correct fix, go to a parts store and ask for a rebuilt starter motor for a 76 Chevy 1-ton van with a 400ci engine. It has shimms and instructions on how to align the starter to the ring gear and would be the correct procedure for your tractor, although the starter will not fit. You also need to take a very careful look at your starters nose piece to check it for "cracks" letting it flex when tourque is applied. The ring gear may be chewed to the extent that it needs to be replaced. You've already solved your second problem, only fix one problem at a time! then move on to the next problem. Repost when you get the starter fixed then I can help with the timing problem. T_Bone
